Tips on How to Ideally Illuminate Your Pond

If you’re fortunate enough to have the space and conditions for a small fishpond or a handmade water garden around your home, then you should consider yourself lucky, as such a feature can give your landscape a very exotic appeal. However, even if you have limited space, you can still create a beautiful scenery with a small beautiful scenic water garden in your lawn.

What truly makes such a feature stand out is how it’s lit up at night. Everyone, including yourself, will be amazed by the illuminated water show during dinner parties or late night barbecues if you have the right type of lighting when creating your water garden. There are a few things to consider before doing so, as not every type of lighting will have the same effect. Here’s what you need to know.

LED Lights

First of all, you should empty your water garden or pond before you install the lights. Next, you should highly consider using LED lights for the job. There are a few reasons why pond LED lights are considered superior to other types. First off, they’re extremely cost effective because they’re energy efficient. Next, they last much more than any other type of light bulb available on the market. And lastly, they illuminate very brightly and evenly.

Colours Matter

LED bulbs are measured on the Kelvin scale, which means that if the pond LED lights are higher on that scale, they will illuminate in a blueish tone, on the other hand, the ones that are on the lower end, will give a more yellow tone. Lights placed on the base of the pond should typically be blue in order to reflect the water, which will create a magical aesthetic. Warmer colours, like yellow and orange, highlight plants and rocks around the pond more effectively. You should play around with the colours to see what looks best in your setting.

Choose the Lighting Locations

Some of the best lighting positions for a pond or water garden are where the waterfall meets the pond or the water cascades. If you have a waterfall, you can add lighting behind it to give it a shimmering and warm glow. You usually want lights all around the pond or water garden to highlight all water features. If you point them elsewhere, you could make the pond difficult to be spotted from certain areas as the lights may shine right in your eyes from that position.

Don’t Overdo It

Don’t use too many lights, especially if you have fish in the pond as this could make it difficult to see them at night. Instead, you can use accent lighting on the pond’s surrounding structure. This will allow the light to “bleed” into the pond instead of directly coming from it.
