Don’t you hate it when you take your car to a mechanic and he overcharges you for a simple maintenance task? If you are a victim of costly car repair and maintenance bills, there are ways to avoid such costs and take matters into your own hands. The reason – cars, in general, are not that hard to maintain as auto shops imply. At least not for all parts. For instance, many drivers think that you need to have special skills to perform windscreen repair or windscreen replacement. Obviously this is wrong thinking, as you only need the right tools and little knowledge to change your windshield in only one day and do a damn good job by the way. However, you do need to take some percussion as improper windscreen replacement can cause windshield to crack while driving. So what does it take and how do you change your windshield without anyone noticing that it has been replaced?

First and foremost, you need to find the exact same windscreen for your car make and model. Make sure it is from the same car manufacturer because you can never be sure about the quality of replicas.
Then, you need to disassemble all accessories that are attached to the windshield to make other steps easier. These are: rear view mirror, wipers, rubber gaskets and other. Get all necessary items and tools needed. Do not forget gloves for protection as you can never know when an accident can happen – in our case, a glass may brake and cut you. Also gather all other tools you need, like screwdrivers, a thin knife, special glue or a sealant.

Put a small screwdriver under the gasket and use the knife to slowly detach the whole gasket. Next comes the part where you actually remove the windscreen while pushing it carefully from inside of your car. Windshield glass is pretty heavy, so ask for help from a friend, family friend or neighbor. The whole process of windscreen replacement is mostly about the following step – apply sealant or other special adhesive to all edges and very precisely place the new windscreen. Final step is putting back the rubber gasket and cleaning all dirt and stains around it.
