The Ideal Way to Install Bathroom Mirrors and Sinks
Your bathroom deserves the same treatment as the rest of the rooms in your home. Luckily, replacing a couple of details can change the vibe of your bathroom in no time. A quick and easy way to spruce up this part of your home is by changing the bathroom mirror and sink.
How to Fit a Bathroom Mirror
The first thing you need to do before installing a bathroom mirror is to decide whether you want to place it in the same place and on the same wall. Before beginning, make sure to check whether the wall can support the mirror. You can also check for some pipes or cables concealed behind the wall. This is paramount in order to perform a safe and neat bathroom mirror installation. If not sure whether there are cables or pipes inside the wall, you can invest in a pipe and cable detector. Unlike the bulky professional cable locators, you can invest in the smaller digital version which has proven great for the job.
When done, it is time to choose a store, dive into the large selection of bathroom supplies and find the mirror that’s most suitable for your bathroom style and available space. Once you have chosen the right model, check for any cracks or other malfunctions. Place it on the wall, and with the help of a spirit level make sure you’re installing it straight (you might need some help since you won’t be able to hold the mirror and measure at the same time). Take a pencil and start marking the holes that need to be drilled to improve the mirror’s stability.
Now that you have marked the place for the holes, it is time to choose the right drill for the wall. In case you are going to make drills on tiles, it is recommended placing two pieces of masking tape over each hole in a cross shape. This will reduce the chances of the drill skidding when making the holes. Once the holes are ready, insert wall plugs into the holes and prepare the mirror for installation by applying silicone on each side of the frame where it meets the wall. Remove the protective film and you’re done!
How to Install a Bathroom Vanity Sink
Before removing the old sink, the first thing you need to do is turn off the water and open the faucet in order to release any remaining pressure. Place a towel under the curved section also known as P-trap (to catch any water that spills from the tap) and loosen or completely remove the tap down from the sink drainpipe.
With the help of a utility knife, disconnect the water lines from the valves and start removing the screws that hold the vanity to the wall. Once done, pull it out and inspect the wall for any touch-ups and proceed to mark out the new vanity position. With the help of a stud finder, locate and mark the studs within the new vanity outline.
Take the new vanity cabinet and position it in the right place. With the help of a spirit level, check if the vanity is positioned properly and when done, drill plot holes into the nearest studs and attach it with screws.
Attaching the Counter
Although the newest and dazzling models of bathroom vanities come with an attached counter, if you’ve chosen one without a counter, its installation is not that difficult. All you need is to secure the vanity top to the cabinet with the help of a thin bead of caulk along the edge where the backsplash meets the wall. With the help of a caulk finishing tool or a rubber, push the caulk into the gap between the wall and vanity and that’s it.
Now it’s time to install the faucet. You can do that by following the manufacturer’s instructions, as different faucets require a different approach. When done, attach the P-trap to the new sink drain line and apply the plumber tape in a clockwise direction. Attach and tighten the faucet connection and attach the water valves, and you’re done. And before bragging yourself about your work, test the faucet and check all the connections for any leaks.
How to Fit a Bathroom Sink
Besides installing a whole new vanity, you can replace just the bathroom sink if you want. Since you will come across a plethora of different sinks when looking for bathroom supplies, you need to know that all of them require different installation. So, once you have chosen your sink, you should carefully go over the installation steps in order to have a successful installation.
