The Ideal Army Surplus Products that “Got Your Six”
What Are Army Surplus Products?
We’ve all heard the term “army surplus” but what does it mean exactly? Army vintage surplus products are non-offensive military equipment that’s been produced in excess or is outdated for military use, so it’s sold to the civilian population, used for camping, collections or just as a certain style.
Army surplus stores originated in the American Civil War. Before the war, states used the militia system, which meant that every militia armed and dressed themselves, which was also the case throughout Europe. During the war, the US government (both Confederate and Union) conscripted mass supplies in army goods to prepare their troops. With the War ending not too long after, most of these goods were left in storage, so, in order for the government to recoup some of their losses, they started selling off some of these excess items to the civilian population. And so, the Military and Navy Surplus Store was born.
Later on, after WWII, the US government expanded this model and decided to make a bigger business out of it due to its wartime surplus amounts. This further expanded during the following wars in Korea and Vietnam, cementing the vintage 70s style for people way up to in the 90s. At this point, these stores were everywhere, and everyone owned military clothing or equipment.
Most online hunting and military retailers provide a wide selection of army surplus products.
Camping Equipment
As you might have expected, army goods are made for field use, and as such, they are a great option for camping equipment as they can withstand a range of elements.
Canteens and flasks are an excellent example of this. The plastic bottle-type canteens/flasks contain room for one quart (almost a litre) of any liquid, keeping it within the proper temperature. Usually made from aluminium, they prevent liquid contamination from bacteria due to the material’s antibacterial properties. All in all, they are extremely good looking well functional vintage items that won’t cost you more than a couple of bucks.
Military mess plates serve the same basic function but for food. Small, lightweight, inexpensive, antibacterial, non-corrodible and relatively cheap, they are a great product to have when camping. Hunting and fishing knives can be also found in these shops. Think parachute cords, travel kits, ammo cans, portable stoves, etc.
Bags
Military-grade bags are always a smart investment as they are usually made from extremely durable materials. These bags will last through storms and hurricanes and will keep your possessions safe from the elements.
Clothing
Who doesn’t love a good army boot or bomber jacket? These items are key pieces of casual wear that will keep you warm and looking good in all weather conditions. Army boots are the perfect all-terrain boots as they are made to take a beating and to be warm and waterproof.
Other Cool Accessories
Ever head of glow sticks? Before they were used during rave parties, they were a source of illumination in dark wet places. Without the need of fire, these little flowers can light up your surroundings and can be used for reading maps or marking your path.
Camo fabric wraps are ideal to be used when you need to conceal gear and equipment. This is a self-adhering elastic material that stretches and sticks to itself, conforming to any shape. This material not only conceals your gear but it also protects it, adds more grip, insulates your hands from hot or cold materials and reduces accidental ‘clanking’ noise. And the best part of it all is that when it’s removed, it leaves no residue.
Camo face paint is the perfect add on to your John Rambo Halloween costume. It’s extremely easy to apply, even easier to wash off and made from non-toxic materials that will not irritate your face. Whether you’re going hunting in the woods or acting out a scene from Tropic Thunder in your back yard, this is defiantly the face paint you want.
Ways to Incorporate Them in Your Daily Life
Using these pieces of clothing and accessories when camping can really boost your comfort level and safety. What’s more, a lot of people enjoy the vintage army surplus look, it makes them feel more retro. Some enjoy them for patriotic purposes, and others just think they’re cool looking.
