Roman Blinds: The Just-Right Window Coverings

As a hipster that has an apartment with unpainted brick walls, furniture pieces all different but perfectly connected with a stylish cohesion and a lot of famous quotes in various types of frames hanging on the walls, choosing the right window covers was something that troubled me a lot. You see, you can’t just go with whatever when you have large windows, positioned perfectly so they light the room in a way that accentuates the beauty of every perfectly positioned piece of furniture, decoration and colour. No, you need to think and choose carefully, because if you mess it up with the window covers, your entire room décor will be flushed down the toilet. And yes, that’s a hipster talking and trust me, we know a thing or two about interior design.

Since I have a friend that kind of made a huge mistake with her choice, I decided to do a little digging on the matter and choose like a pro. Among all the choices on the market, for my interior scheme the best choice were Roman blinds. And just when I decided to buy Roman blinds, I had to face yet another obstacle: there are several different types of Roman blinds.

roman blinds

Unconstructed flat Roman blinds

These are very simple in their design and appearance; made of one simple piece of fabric hanging flat over a window, unconstructed Roman blinds don’t have back bars or additional panels. You can choose any type of patterned textile for this purpose because they mainly don’t have horizontal seams nor stitching to complicate the pattern. Very casual, very informal, perfect for hipstery homes that don’t follow a particular interior design scheme. All these characteristics and the fact that these are very easy to maintain are what made me decide to buy Roman blinds in the first place. The fact that they go perfectly with my design style was the little extra push.

Constructed flat Romans

Contrary to the unconstructed ones, the constructed Roman blinds have back bars that kind of support them. I wouldn’t use these for a room designed in a hipster-ish way simply because they won’t contribute much to the entire ambiance. They create some sort of clean, modern and very unfussy look, almost as if they were especially designed for the particular windows. I’d say these would go perfectly for a design scheme between modern and classy.

Relaxed Romans

These are also known as London shades; classy and casual at the same time, they gently bow when they’re raised. Since these are relaxed, they go best with short windows, nothing large. And if they’re wider, they’d usually have wider poufs.

Soft fold/waterfall Roman shades

Whether they’re raised or lowered, soft fold or waterfall shades feature permanent folds. You can find these made of either fabric or a more exotic alternative, bamboo. Depending on your overall design and needs, of course.

These are just few of the many types of Roman blinds you could choose from. Make no mistake: although they look all the same, they’re not; especially when you put them on your windows. So, before you start looking for yours, make sure you can define your interior design scheme and choose as that style dictates. And of course, no need to emphasize that: do not compromise quality in order to safe a few dollars that won’t mean anything to you.
