Dance Audition: What’s Ideal to Wear and from What Should You Stay Away?
There’s one quite lovely statement made by the great Judith Jamison which says: “People come to see beauty, and I dance to give it to them” and while this is a great mantra to remember, especially for your first dance auditions, while on the topic of beauty, what you should not forget about is the importance of the type of clothes you wear. In fact, the first thing the judges notice when on the stage isn’t the song you have chosen or the speech you have carefully practiced at home – they notice your appearance. What you wear to a dance audition can really make or break your experience on the stage which is why you need to choose your clothing carefully. That being said, let’s take a look at the things you should and should not wear on a dance audition.
Stay Away from Baggy Clothes
Regardless of the type of dance audition you are going to, a key rule to remember is not to wear baggy clothes. And while there is a dancewear top for any type of dance, people still show up in oversized t-shirts/sweatshirts or too short crop tops that reveal more than the directors want to see. In order to avoid making this mistake, a good piece of advice given by directors of many audition companies is to know your body and understand what looks good on it. Try on different types of clothes, experiment, consult with friends or family, and what’s more important follow the restricted dance audition rules. The first impression is everything, so make sure you leave a good one by choosing the right dancewear top and bottom.
Limit the Amount of Accessories You Wear
Except for wearing baggy clothes, studies have shown that wearing too many accessories is also a big no-no when it comes to leaving a good impression. Bracelets are the most commonly used type of accessories and judges say that the noise coming from them is pretty annoying and distracting, which in turn prevents them from not being able to focus on the dancing moves completely. So ladies, ban those bangles or keep it all to a minimum (one accessory for example).
White is the New Black
Wearing well-fitting clothes that show off your body is a must, but the choice of colour has a lot to do regarding whether you’ll be noticeable enough. According to many dance company directors, white is the colour choice that can help you stand out from the crowd full of bodies that want to be remembered. So remember, although black is considered the safest choice there is, it is not the ideal one when going on an audition.
There are many other tips you could make use of before going on an audition, but the aforementioned ones are a must for leaving a good first impression and for having a chance to be the chosen one.
